The Court-Martial of Mother Jones by Edward M. Steel, Jr., Editor (PB, 1995) | Books & More Bookstore

Content Description:  In March 1913, labor agitator Mary Harris "Mother" Jones and 47 other civilians were tried by a military court on charges of murder and conspiracy to murder stemming from violence that erupted during the long coal miners' strikes in West Virginia. The national outcry over Mother Jones's imprisonment led the Senate to examine mining conditions in West Virginia. Eventually prisoners were released and the strike settled.  The court transcript sheds light and provides insights into the Progressive movement, the history of the UMW, the development of congressional investigation committees, and the beginnings of the Labor Department.
